Abstract
When Charlotte von Hezel edited Das Wochenblatt für's schöne Geschlecht (The Weekly Paper for the Fair Sex) in 1779, she was the first woman in the German territories to publish a magazine for women using her own name. Her magazine introduced two journalistic innovations for the time: a health column written for women and weekly literary reviews written by Hezel. In this essay, Das Wochenblatt is compared with a better-known periodical for women, Pomona , edited by Sophie von La Roche. By identifying the ways in which Das Wochenblatt resembles or differs from Pomona , we gain insights into why Pomona received more attention than Das Wochenblatt in the eighteenth century. (MA)
