Abstract

It was on June 29th, 1854, that Charlotte Brontë married the Rev. Arthur Bell Nicholls. Some biographers have regarded Charlotte's husband as an unduly stolid figure, and a number of disparaging references to him have been made. A more generous light was thrown upon his character, however, and an insight into Charlotte's marital happiness afforded by Mrs. Marjorie Gallop, great-niece of Mr. Nicholls, in an article she contributed to The Yorkshire Post on the centenary of Charlotte's marriage.
