Abstract

The role of Joseph Severn (1793–1879) in the life of John Keats is well known and documented in biographies of both men. Observant readers will have noticed that another individual, with the same surname, occasionally appears in the Keats literature. Charles Severn, a fellow medical student of Keats, is mentioned very briefly in, for instance, Andrew Motion’s biography of Keats. He is rather more prominent in literature concerning Henry Stephens, a fellow student of Keats, but here also detail is lacking. This essay presents details of the life and activities of Charles Severn, his friendship with Stephens and Keats, and his probable family relationship with his better known namesake.
