Abstract

The author attempts to find out unmentioned works by Charles Dickens which Shevchenko could have known. Besides Nicholas Nickleby and David Copperfield, it is possible to establish that the Ukrainian writer was familiar with Dombey and Son, Bleak House as well as with The Pickwick Papers and Martin Chuzzlewit. A historical and typological comparison of both writers’prose reveals thematic analogies and similar artistic devices. From the examined material, we can infer that, to a certain extent, Shevchenko has been inspired by the british novelist’s works, particularly in the elaboration of some minor characters of his short stories. On the one hand the typological similarities disclose that the two writers share a common conception of the world, but on the other hand the limited common elements emphasize Shevchenko’s creative individuality.
