Abstract

Electro-absorption (EA) spectra have been measured on sublimed films of metal-phthalocyanine (MPc; M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) in α and β polymorphic forms. Characteristic features observed in β-CuPc films and analogous structures in α-CuPc films are attributed to charge-transfer (CT) excitation bands, similar to those observed before in the electro-reflectance spectra on β-CuPc single crystals by Tokura et al. Effects of polymorphism and of substitutional metals upon CT bands are investigated on various MPc films. It is suggested that the effect of hybridization between intramolecular excitations and CT excitons plays an important role in the EA spectra of these MPc crystals.
