Abstract

The dependence of energy losses of specularly reflected ions on incident and exit charge states is measured at glancing-angle incidence for 3.2 MeV Li ions on a clean (001) surface of a SnTe single crystal. Observed energy losses of Li j+ for incident Li i+ are nearly equal to those of Li i+ for incident Li j+ . Using a stochastic model of the charge exchange and the energy loss of ions, position-dependent charge-exchange probabilities of MeV Li ions on the surface and position-dependent stopping powers of the surface are derived from the observed charge-state distributions and energy losses.
