Abstract

The cross-sections for production of high transverse momentum Pt charged hadrons in the collisions of 800 GeV protons with tungsten and beryllium targets were calculated. Our model relies on multiple scattering of high transverse momentum fragments of the outgoing partons. The results of the model agree with experimental measurements at low momentum transfer, but deviate from measured data at higher momentum transfers. We attribute these discrepancies to the structure of QCD at short distances and the unknown coupling of quarks and gluons to the vacuum.
