Abstract

Charge transfer mass spectra of N 2O were obtained with slow positive ions. The fragmentations from different, ionic states are given by a breakdown graph, i.e. the mass spectrum as a function of ionization energy. Proton transfer to N 2O was observed for a number of incident ions. The protonated molecule N 2OH + fragmented only to N 2H + and OH +. The ion-molecule reactions in N 2O were investigated with N 2O + initially formed in different electronic states. Ions in the ground X̃ state gave metastable peaks due to collision-induced dissociation to NO + and N 2 + whereas NO + was shown to be formed in a bimolecular reaction from N 2O + in the à state.
