Abstract

Mass spectra of i-propanol obtained after charge transfer with 26 different positive ions of low kinetic energy are reported. The observed mass spectra are used to construct the breakdown graph for i-propanol, that is the mass spectrum as a function of the energy transferred to the molecule in the charge transfer. The results are compared with the graph for n-propanol [3] and with calculated breakdown graphs [4]. The fragmentation pathways in i-propanol are discussed. The differences between the mass spectra for the two isomers are larger with charge transfer than with electron impact if the recombination energy of the incident ion is below 14 eV. The reverse is true for energies exceeding 14 eV.
