Abstract

The reaction of N 2+ with N 2 occurs by single charge transfer while that of Ar 2+ with N 2 occurs by double charge transfer, although in each collision both single and double charge transfer are energetically allowed. The rates are: k(N 2+,N 2) = (2.8 = 0.6) × 10 −9 cm 3/s. and k(Ar 2+( 1D), N 2) = (1.4 = 0.2) × 10 −9 cm 3/s.
