Abstract

Relative level population densities for several excited states of magnesium atom and ion have been measured at several RF powers and spatial positions. These were used to construct Saha-Boltzmann plots that show that the 2 S and 2 D levels of Mg + are overpopulated relative to the results obtained from a simple collisional-radiative model. The degree of overpopulation has been rationalized using a simple model previously developed for Mg-Ar charge transfer.
