Abstract

Ion kinetic energy spectra were observed for the triply charged molecular ion C 20H 3+· 12, of benzo[ a]pyrene and for triply charged C 20H 3+· 10 ions. The spectra are interpreted in terms of charge separation reactions in which doubly charged and singly charged product ions are formed. Seven charge separation reactions were observed for C 20H 3+· 12 and five for C 20H 3+· 10. Kinetic energy release measurements, which were obtained for all of the charge separation reactions, appear to be unique for each reaction as the peaks are steep-sided and dish-topped to the exclusion of ions between peak extremities. An attempt is made to interpret the data in terms of charge location within the triply charged moiety. Some discussion of singly and doubly charged ions is presented.
