Abstract

In the Tokamak and stellarator confinement concept, an essential role of the rotational transform is to prevent charge accumulation due to the Del B and curvature drifts. The author shows that without rotational transform, charge accumulation can still be avoided by a fast poloidal bulk plasma rotation. It is demonstrated that it is feasible to impose the necessary rotation by high power, perpendicular, off-axis neutral beam injection (NBI). The consequences of these new results are discussed.
