Abstract

The effect of the inclusion of an isospin dependent term in the nuclear optical potential which can then cause charge exchange has been considered. An experiment determined the ratio, R, for positive to negative pions of 11C production from the interaction of 180 MeV pions with 12C, to be unity. There is a major discrepancy between this result and that predicted by a simple impluse approximation which gives a ratio of R = 3. The inclusion of charge exchange in a nuclear final state interaction has reduced the ratio R to less than 2.
