Abstract
Monitoring and analyzing urban spatial pattern and dynamic changes can guide the sustainable urbanization process. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, random forest algorithm was used to extract the urban built-up area of Changchun in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. Subsequently, the landscape expansion index was used to identify the types of urban expansion and explore the evolutionary process of urban expansion patterns. Results show that: (1) Based on GEE platform, the urban built-up area can be quickly extracted with high accuracy, which is faster and easier to operate than traditional remote sensing image processing methods. (2) The urban expansion mode of the study area in the past 30 years has been a dynamic process from “diffusion” to “aggregation”. The center of gravity of the urban spatial pattern is shifting from the “center” to the “periphery”. The combination of GEE platform, OpenStreetMap, and Landsat imagery can effectively and efficiently map the urban expansion and the dynamic urban forms.
