Abstract

The main content dealt with in this paper is to validate the possibility of a new apparatus in measuring frictional properties, which is based on the characterization system of the handle properties of fabrics and yarns (CHS-FY). The CHS-FY system was developed independently and capable of measuring weight, bending, frictional and tensile behavior just through one pulling-out test and characterizing the tactile handle of fabrics and yarns. The frictional step is only discussed in the present paper. By analyzing the frictional process of fabric-to-surface friction sliding along a circular profile, the theoretical analysis and modeling to friction are made and the corresponding formula of frictional coefficient is also obtained. Through friction tests, comparisons of frictional coefficient values between experimental and theoretical results were conducted. The results show that there exists good accordance, and frictional measuring principle is useful for characterizing the frictional behavior of fabrics. The frictional modeling is greatly helpful to select the materials wrapped on the roller to better utilize and control the frictional action of fabric and surface.
