Abstract

Not similar to the current research interests on citation networks and co-author networks, this paper focuses on the competitive journal network. By investigating the structure of an empirically competitive journal network, this paper shows that the competitive journal network has four fundamentally topological characteristics, including hierarchical modularity, positive degree correlation, exponential degree distributions, and self-similarity. Due to current models being unable to effectively reproduce these observed characteristics, a simple model is proposed and it can predict the four topological characteristics simultaneously.
