Abstract
This paper reports on the mechanical and morphological properties of polylactic acid (PLA)/Natural rubber (NR) composite reinforced by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nano-silicon carbide (SiC) particles. Their properties in relation to optimal particle content are discussed. The pure composite is a blend of PLA/NR and liquid epoxidised natural rubber (LENR), which is used as a compatibilizer at a percentage of volume ratios 60:30:10 respectively. The nanocomposites were with various MWCNTs-SiC compositions. The results extracted from flexural test showed that the bending modulus and bending strength of a 3wt % MWCNTs reinforced sample increase as compared with the pure PLA/NR sample and other nanocomposites. The improved dispersion properties was due to altered interparticle interactions, MWCNTs, SiC and MWCNTs-SiC networks that combined to generate a synergistic effect that is shown by SEM micrographs.
