Abstract
• Virulent K. variicola strains have circulated in the nosocomial setting since 1987, 17 years apart from its first description. • A diversity of virulence-encoding genes was found in each clinical K. variicola strain that were considered unrelated by ERIC-PCR. • We also demonstrated that K. variicola is an ancient enteric pathogen. • All K. variicola strains were multisusceptible to the main antimicrobials used in the clinical practice.
