Abstract

It has been reported that collagenase in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial fluid is likely to play a role in the pathogenesis of joint diseases. Collagenase, originating from several tissues, is generally found in a latent form which can be activated with trypsin, chaotropic agents, or mercurials. The latency of collagenase has been explained by two mechanisms:(a) procollagenase is secreted by cells into the extracellular matrix and is activated by certain processes and (b) an inhibitor suppresses the activity of collagenase by forming enzyme-inhibitor complexes
