Abstract
1. The basic proteins, histones and protamines, from the emitted sperm of the annelid Platynereis dumerilii have been isolated and characterized. 2. The somatic core histones are maintained in the chromatin of Platynereis spermatozoa. 3. Four specific histones H1 have been identified. Two closely related proteins of them are characterized by their low Mr (⋍ 13,000) and constitute 80% of 5% PCA soluble material. 4. Besides a histone complement, the sperm chromatin of Platynereis encloses two closely related protamines of Mr 7000 which contain 50% of arginine and represent 15% of the total basic proteins of this chromatin. 5. Platynereis dumerilii sperm cells can be used as a model system for understanding the compaction of chromatin in case of coexistence of particular histones H1 and protamines.
