Abstract

The nature of the collagenous protein synthesized from bone and cartilage mRNA in an in vitro reticulocyte translation system has been investigated. The properties of a significant portion of the collagenous protein are those of native rather than denatured procollagen. It appears that the polypeptide chains contain sufficient information to direct chain association.
