Abstract

The acidity of zeolite Beta has been characterized by FTi.r. spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption (t.p.d.) of NH 3. Three types of hydroxyl groups, absorbing at 3740, 3602, and 3540 cm −1, have been identified and assigned to terminal/internal SiOH, framework (OH), and hydrogen-bonded (OH) groups, respectively. The influence of adsorption of NH 3, D 2O, benzene, and pyridine on these hydroxyl groups has been evaluated. From a comparison of these results with those obtained with zeolites Y and ZSM-5, the following decreasing order for the acidic strength of the framework hydroxyls is derived: ZSM-5 > Beta > Y.
