Abstract

High resolution L-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) has been used to identify both inorganic and organic sulphur species in untreated coal. Sulphur L-edge spectra of model compounds (both organic and inorganic sulphur containing compounds as well as elemental sulphur) have been recorded using synchrotron radiation. The sulphur L-edge spectra (from 160 to ≈ 240 eV) of the model compounds have been compared with coal spectra. The results allow different oxidation states of sulphur and also organic based sulphur to be clearly distinguished.
