Abstract

Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) was isolated from sheep serum by ultracentrifugation, gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography and characterized by polyacrylamide electro-phoresis (PAGE), analytical electrofocusing, amino acid composition and amino acid sequence analysis. SAA was found in similar quantities in the high density lipoprotein (HDL) fraction of serum from sheep stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as in patients with inflammatory diseases. SAA from sheep was found to have very similar characteristics as SAA from other species investigated earlier with respect to molecular weight, isoelectric point, degree of heterogeneity, amino acid composition and amino acid sequence.
