Abstract
Electroejaculation is an accepted method of semen collection from non-human primates and is typically performed using direct penile or rectal probe electro-stimulation. Six mature male olive baboons (Papio anubis) were subjected to rectal probe electro-stimulation procedure that yielded 65 usable ejaculates in 69 attempts over a period of 16 weeks. The four non-usable ejaculates consisted of seminal fluid without sperm cells and thus were not analysed. The analysis of ejaculate volume, concentration, % motility, liquefaction times, and morphology in this study has provided information on the quality of semen samples. It is anticipated that this analysis will provide valuable information for male fertility studies and the development of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) system in the olive baboon as a model for human IVF.
