Abstract
In this paper a new characterization of algebraic power series will be presented. The known characterization of rational power series shall also be established in our framework in order to emphasize the analogy of both kinds of characterization. Te prepare such a characterization some necessary concepts from the representation theory of monoids and from an appropriate generalization ef module theory must be introduced.
