Abstract

Two new α-titanium alloys, Ti–2Al–2.5Zr and Ti–4Al–2V, have been oxidized at 300°C in a neutral water steam at a pressure of 8.5MPa, and the oxidation behaviors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ auger electron spectroscopy (AES), Raman spectroscopy and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The results showed that the oxide layer was mainly composed of anatase–TiO2, and the thickness of the oxide scales increased with oxidation time. TiO was found with increasing depth, and the segregation of Al at the surface was also found during oxidation process.
