Abstract
Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis are infection- causing bacteria that infect humans and animals. The treatment of bacterial infections with Boswellia serrata is widely used because of its complexity and long-term benefits with minimal side effects. The essential oil from B. serrata has better antibacterial properties than gum (boswellic acid/BA). Nanotechnology is used in BA to increase its antibacterial properties. This research aimed to analyze the characteristics of nano-particle size (NBA), as well as to test and compared the antibacterial activity with BA. The NBA made by ultrasonication method, and the antibacterial activity was tested by agar well diffusion method. The samples were boswellic acid with ultrasonication duration of 30 minutes (NBA-N1) and 150 minutes (NBA-N2), 30% boswellic acid in DMSO (BA-D1), and 100% boswellic acid in DMSO (BA-D2), and controls. The particle size of NBA-N1 showed 581.9 nm-sized with 0.715 PdI value, and the particle size of NBA-N2 showed 282.3 nm-sized with 0.716 PdI value. The NBA-N2 had a round shape with a smooth surface, and had fairly good stability with a zeta potential value of 24.5±4.66 mV. The highest antibacterial activity was found in NBA-N2, followed by BA-D2 which was not significantly different from NBA-N1, and the lowest was found in BA-D1. Boswellic acid nano size has better antibacterial ability than non-nano boswellic acid.
