Abstract

Copolymers (PMGI) containing iminodiacetic acid were obtained from copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and a chelating monomer, glycidyl methacrylate–iminodiacetic acid (GMA–IDA), with potassium persulfate as an initiator. Cu(II)–PMGI complexes were prepared by mixing PMGI and copper sulfate solution. The PMGI copolymers and Cu(II)–PMGI complexes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, infrared and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature ( T g) of the copolymers and complexes had one value (∼131 °C), and that was independent of the GMA–IDA content. However, the proton spin–lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame ( T 1ρ H) of the IDA segments in complexes was reduced as compared with copolymers, while that of the rigid MMA in the former was larger than in the latter.
