Abstract

hippocampus was investigated for TGP expression and localization by RTPCR, Western blot analyses and immunohistochemistry. Results: The mRNA and protein expression levels of this TGP were increased in AD compared to non-demented control temporal cortex. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed localization of TGP in both, neurons and astrocytes. Neuronal expression was observed in non-demented cases with moderate amyloid deposits while immunoreactive astrocytes primarily appeared in end-stage AD pathology. Interestingly, immunoreactive astrocytes were localized around plaques immunoreactive for a known ligand of this TGP. Conclusions: Our data indicate that both, neuronal and astrocytic expression of this TGP are associated with an increased presence of Ab during AD pathology. Association of astrocytes expressing this TGP with its ligand localized in Ab plaques suggests that this TGP is involved in the mobilization towards and the removal of Ab deposits.
