Abstract

The properties of composites are significantly influenced by the structural properties of hybrid yarns and textile preforms used during the consolidation process. Different types of thermoplastic hybrid yarns and textile preforms are employed in composite fabrication. Since each hybrid yarn and preform type is unique in its feature and structure, the composites made from such material possess different characteristics. Therefore, analysing and understanding the structural properties of hybrid yarns is essential. Factors that affect hybrid yarns are the raw material properties, hybrid yarn process parameters, fibre-matrix distribution in yarn cross-section, preforming behaviour and damage of reinforcing fibres during various operations. In this regard, the current chapter discusses these factors that govern/affect the quality of the hybrid yarns. A summary and future prospects on this topic are also discussed at the end of this chapter.
