Abstract

SummaryIn the absence of foreign helper viruses, human adenoviruses are defective in simian cells, but the degree of effectiveness varies with the adenovirus. Adenovirus 2 initiates an infection in the simian cells but there is no increase in virus titer. When simian cells are infected with adenovirus 7, a small amount of infectious virus is produced but the amount never exceeds the input level. Each cell in the population produces a small amount of virus. The increase in infectious virus is dependent upon DNA synthesis. The simian cells therefore appear to be “leaky” for some human adenovirus serotypes.
