Abstract

This paper presents corona discharge current pulse characterization under positive and negative DC voltage excitations. Two electrode systems with three different gap spacings generated corona discharges. Different corona modes in atmospheric air were observed with voltage level changes. Commercial shunt resistors and a high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) captured corona current pulses. The appropriate resistor type and value were determined for the shunt resistor measurement. BNC terminator was proposed as a shunt resistor to detect corona discharge current pulses, and the availability of the shunt resistors and HFCTs for corona pulse detection was discussed. After gathering corona discharge pulse data, features from the pulses were extracted. The best features describing corona discharge types were specified using a recursive feature elimination method based on a decision tree estimator. The corona discharges were discriminated with an accuracy rate of 0.994.
