Abstract

In the present work, the characterization of asphaltenes extracted from the Middle East crude oil is reported and compared to the asphaltenes characterization reported previously. The overall asphaltenes colloidal stability in the crude oil was analyzed by using Automated Flocculation Titrimeter. The structural parameters of the asphaltenes were examined using CHNS analyzer, FT-IR, NMR and RAMAN spectroscopy. The H/C ratio and the proton NMR data analysis were carried out to identify the aromaticity level of the asphaltenes while the RAMAN analysis estimates the average aromatic sheet of the asphaltenes molecules. It was found that the estimated aromatic sheet of the asphaltenes extracted from this Middle East crude oil was about 1.6 nm, which is within the range of the reported results obtained for other previously extracted asphaltenes.
