Abstract

Undermatched welds are becoming more and more common as the tensile strength of the base metal used in industry continues to increase. This paper shall discuss the metallurgical characterization of an undermatched weld in an alloy steel with approximately 170 ksi typical tensile strength. The characterization included magnetic particle and radiographic inspection of the welded plate, a metallographic examination, microhardness surveys, tensile testing, bend testing, and fractographic examination of the tensile specimens.
