Abstract
The difficulties of studying human enteroviruses in other than primate hosts instigated a search for similar agents in common laboratory animals. It was hoped that an easily manipulated virushost system might be found which would provide a model of behavior analogous to that of the enteroviruses in humans. The search was initiated in chickens since these animals were readily available under conditions which might be expected to favor the wide dissemination of multiple strains. In addition, they could be reared for experimental purposes in complete isolation from others of their kind.
