Abstract

A commercial cold cathode saddle field fast atom beam (FAB) source for which the manufacturers claim almost total neutral content in the beam has been characterized. A series of characteristics have been produced to allow the operator to select optimum operating conditions for the source. The neutral content of the beam has been determined over a range of conditions and found to vary from below 50% to almost 100%. The high neutral content was found to correspond to regions where the source operates in its most inefficient mode, thus limiting the range of applications of the source. Measurements of beam energy, energy spread, divergence and multi-charge component content are also presented.
