Abstract

1. 1. A ribonuclease from the hepatopancreas of the queen scallop, Chlamys opercularis, has been purified thirtyfold, with an apparent recovery of 40 per cent. The purified enzyme was free of DNAase, phosphomonoesterase and phosphodiesterase activities. 2. 2. The enzyme is an acid RNAase. At constant ionic strength, the pH optimum was 5·9. At constant pH (5·2), activity was optimal at an ionic strength of 0·18. 3. 3. The molecular weight of the enzyme is 30,500. 4. 4. The enzyme is relatively non-specific. K m values for poly (U), poly (A) and poly (C) were 33, 40 and 100 μg/ml, respectively. 5. 5. Enzyme activity is endonucleolytic and is independent of divalent metal ions.
