Abstract

In this study we are identifying an unknown, putative antibiotic producing bacterium found on a piece of submerged coastal plastic. We isolated genomic DNA, amplified hypervariable regions of 16S rRNA and used Oxford Nanopore sequencing to characterize this species. Through this process we have identified this bacterium as Phaeobacter inhibens. Further characterization of this sample based on a partially complete genome will be discussed as well as potential antibacterial properties that could prove useful for future research and medicinal purposes.Support or Funding InformationThis project is supported by the NSF‐HSI grant #1832545, and from NU internal grants.
