Abstract

AbstractHydrodynamic characteristics of an in vitro membrane permeation system for controlled drug delivery studies were investigated by measuring dissolution rates of benzoic acid in various aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol 400. The mass transfer coefficient was well correlated in terms of three dimensionless numbers: Sherwood, Schmidt, and Reynolds numbers. By using the correlation equation, the intrinsic permeation rate of testosterone through silicone membranes was precisely extracted from the experimental data obtained under various nonideal flow conditions.
