Abstract
Several authors have studied the operation of laser sources based on the Holmium 5I7→5I8 transition in different host crystals. Laser action has been obtained both in pulsed and cw regime; liquidnitrogen as well as room temperature operation has been reported [1-5]. Successful pumping schemes include the use of laser diodes [6-8]; the tuning range has been measured in ref. [9] and the application to a LIDAR device has been described in ref. [10].
