Abstract

Twin related ε′-Mg54Ag17 precipitates adopting different orientation relationships (ORs) with the matrix were observed in an Mg–Sn–Mn–Ag–Zn alloy. One of the ORs together with the associated precipitates morphology are common to those observed from single-crystal particles. The other OR is new, as expressed by (0 0 −1)ε′ || (0 0 0 1)α, [2 0 0]ε′ deviating about 6.9° from [1 0 −1 0]α. The particle with the new OR is characterized with three (pairs of) side facets in irrational orientations with respect to the matrix. These orientations are explained based on a Δg analysis, good matching site distribution and a secondary constrained coincidence site lattice (II-CCSL) calculation.
