Abstract

In order to confirm the effectiveness of seed priming treatments, the germination percentage, water absorption characteristics, and volume changes were measured at several selected temperatures in raw and primed cabbage seeds (PR seeds) of two varieties. Priming worked effectively to improve the germination rate. It was determined that water absorption of cabbage seeds occurred in the second falling rate period. The exact solution for the infinite plane sheet diffusion model was used to explain water absorption characteristics of cabbage seeds. The determined values of the diffusion coefficients were higher in PR seeds than in raw seeds. The value of the energy of activation (E) was calculated using an Arrhenius-type equation, which related the diffusion coefficient of the seeds to temperature. The priming treatment significantly increased the specific volume of the cabbage seeds. Therefore, these results suggest that such equations could possibly work as an index to express priming effects.
