Abstract

The hydraulic losses at the entry of vertical inline pump, which cannot be avoided, hence it has to be controlled in design stage of pump suction elements. The objective of present work is to determine the energy losses in inlet pipe of closed coupled vertical inline pump due to turbulence phenomenon. To obtain the losses at upstream of impeller, a study has been made on velocity distribution as well as the turbulent kinetic energy in the inlet pipe. A detailed study is made through computational fluid dynamics tools for flow rates varies from 50 to 150% of nominal flow rate. The results conclude that the losses are predominant at off design condition due to return flow from impeller as well the recirculation effects raised because of geometrical curvature in inlet pipe.
