Abstract
Abstract The optical properties of thermionic triode electron guns, governed largely by the wehnelt, are studied in depth with the aid of a simple model. A unified theory of the beam energy characteristics—total current, brightness and energy distribution—emerges from these calculations. The use of emittance diagrams is explained and the role of the Boersch effect is explored.
