Abstract

1. 1. Serum unsaturated vitamin B 12 binding substance(s) (UBBS) from several animal species were analyzed and found not to be homogenous. 2. 2. The higher vertebrates have a major UBBS peak eluted from the DEAE column later than the UBBS of the reptile and the fishes. Chicken UBBS was characteristically different from the other species. 3. 3. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis demonstrated also the differences of the UBBS between animal species. 4. 4. The association between the high concentration of UBBS and the presence of nucleated red cell was not consistent. 5. 5. No convincing correlation could be found between the UBBS concentration and the metabolic rate of the animals studied.
