Abstract

It is required to clarify the characteristics of forced vibration with magnetic damping for an earthquake-resistant design of conductive thin shell structures located in an electromagnetic field. In this paper, the characteristics of forced vibration are examined using finite element tightly coupled analysis and single-degree-of-freedom coupled model. The results show that the change of resonance frequency is different from that of general viscous damping problems for some combinations of material properties and magnetic fields. It is pronounced when the eddy current decay rate is close to the natural period of the structure.
