Abstract

Pyrolysis of peat gives rise to gaseous products and smoke, with concentrations of the order of 6 mg m −3. Gaseous products (identified by i.r.) are CO 2, CO and CH 4. The characteristic odour is in part due to acetic acid and diacetyl which were separated by chromatography and identified by i.r. spectra, retention time and odour. Chromatograms also showed guaiacol, phenol and m-cresol present, but there were many other minor constituents which could not be identified.
