Abstract

Sources that consist of many lasers that share a dispersive element, such as the MAGIC and the waveguide grating router (WGR) multifrequency lasers (MFL), differ from conventional wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) sources, such as the distributed feedback (DFB) laser, in four main ways: MFLs exhibit high channel spacing accuracy; MFLs have inherent wavelength stabilization; MFLs are uncontrolled mode selection lasers; MFLs are long-cavity lasers. These differences are discussed.
